They are on the road to recovery!

As you are aware, Texas suffered from a catastrophic hurricane that left 40,000 homes flooded and the majority without flood insurance. The Alvarez family are just one of those thousands affected. Eloisa is caring for her 2 adult sons who both suffer with severe medical conditions. Both sons were hospitalized recently, but are now home.

Sisto suffered from a hereditary liver disease inherited from his father. He is in the final preparation of going on the liver transplant list. Arthur has suffered hereditary hypertension and has suffered 3 major strokes and is on dialysis. Sisto lives in a tiny house behind his mother to help care for his mother before he became ill. Both homes suffered flooding during the hurricane and Eloisa’s home suffered severe roof leaking. They were hoping that they could clean the water and stay in their homes.

September 7th, I was contacted through social media to see if I could help. I was able to get a dear friend in Houston to go to the home on September 8 after work and begin taking sheet rock out. He said the bathroom ceiling needs to be taken out before it falls.

Sisto is a retired pastor. They have no homeowner’s insurance. Eloisa’s car was flooded and not working. Getting Arthur to dialysis is difficult, but the motel is in the same area as his dialysis unit.

Prior to Hurricane Harvey, Eloisa and her son Authur lived in a house together, while Sisto lived in a tiny house behind his mother’s home. Sisto’s home was still in the process of being built at the time Hurricane Harvey. Eloisa’s home suffered severe roof leaking and flooding during the hurricane, and is currently inhabitable. Sisto’s home on the other hand did not flood. However, this house is in progress and at this time it does not have sinks, a shower, or a stove.

Kindness from friends has placed the 3 of them in hotels for 15 days, of which we have 11 left. A family friend was able to pay for a 5 day stay in a Super 8 Motel (which began September 8). It is obvious that the houses will not be livable within 5 days. The hotel stay is a tremendous blessing, although a financial burden upon this family as they must purchase all meals outside. Due to the medical conditions of both men, they must have an extremely low salt diet.

We are hoping to raise enough money within 7 days to make this 225 sq foot single room home habitable while the family awaits FEMA aid for Eloisa’s home.

We have received donations of a second hand vanity/sink for the bathroom. We are using volunteers to complete the work. The Alvarez family are one of many NLLB will be assisting. We strive to use all funds wisely and remaining funds will be used towards other Harvey victims needs.

URGENT NEEDS FOR THIS FAMILY:

  • Funds for to make Sisto's home habitable for the three of them until FEMA can help

  • Funds for roof/flood/sheet rock repair of the home

  • Washer/Dryer/Mattresses/Stove

  • Meals while in the hotel

  • Volunteers to help rebuild this home ASAP so that they can get back into their home.

No donation is too small, NLLB has always asked people to donate money they would have spent on a lunch out or an afternoon coffee.

Any assistance, no matter how small is greatly appreciated. You may contact Linley York at 832-463-8889.
