Tragedy once again hit young Afolo's life. His wife died during childbirth (not an uncommon thing in remote areas of developing countries where no medical care is available). She died just a few days ago and NLLB is trying to seek ways to help Afolo and his now 5 children. His baby daughter did survive. Afolo's eldest child is around 8. Afolo is devastated.
I cases like this, often the parent must give the baby to another family as there is no means to feed the new baby. This area has no milk powder or bottles. It is a region with little food and meals are 1-2 times a day, with the main source of food being tiny wild carrots. The wife/mother must gather firewood in order to boil water and cook and carry water from the river. There is no clean water for drinking. NLLB is working fast to seek ways to help and we have a friend going to see the family in the next 10 days. It is a very remote area.
